Alice Russell is in great demand as a vocalist and has gained an enviable reputation as one of the UK’s hottest singers, having recorded with the likes of Massive Attack, The Nextmen and Quantic and performing with the likes of The Roots and The Quantic Soul Orchestra.
Blessed with a lavishly soulful voice, Alice manages to sound both timeless and up to the minute modern. Her live performances have a unique quality; the ability to captivate an audience and to hold their attention throughout, expertly tugging at the heartstrings. Alice has used her talent to great effect, gaining renown for her performances with the mighty Quantic Soul Orchestra and more recently her own band. She has also supported Lonnie Liston Smith, Femi Kuti, De La Soul and appeared on the bill with Amy Winehouse for the British showcase at the Midem Music Conference in Cannes 2007.
Alice’s instinctive self-assurance and sass permeate her recordings too, raising the hairs on the back of many a listener’s neck. Her predominant style is a smouldering blues-inflected lament; but her ever-evolving solo material as well as her collaborations with other producers (including Quantic, Nostalgia 77, The Nextmen, Bah Samba and Kushti) have encompassed everything from funk to soul to gospel to jazz to hip hop and beyond.
For her 2005 album My favourite Letters Alice and co-writer, producer and label mate TM Juke put together a live band, wowing audiences across the UK, Europe and Australia. In summer 2006 Grant Daddy G Marshal (Massive Attack) requested that they play the main stage at The Big Chill festival. She was sandwiched between Norman Jay and his own Massive Attack DJ set. Illustrious company indeed!
